Introduction

Finding our place, successes and setbacks in the school system. Introduction. Going through the school system as someone on the autistic spectrum can be quite the challenging experience. I should know. I was diagnosed with Asperger's at age 12 and went to public school K through 12.

In school, I had a 504, an IEP, and many struggles with friends, homework, and parental nagging. Now, I'm a successful adult living on my own, driving, with a full-time job and everything else you would expect.

But this book isn't about me. Here at Asperger Experts, we believe in learning directly from those who have experienced it, because there's a big difference between lived knowledge and book knowledge when it comes to Asperger's and autism. So we're bringing the experiences, mistakes, lessons, and stories of parents who have had or currently have kids on the spectrum in the school system directly to you.

In the following pages, you'll learn the mistakes they've made, the things they've figured out, and what they wish they could have done differently. The journey of raising someone with Asperger's is tough, but that doesn't mean you are alone in the journey. Together, we can all benefit from each other's knowledge and perspective.
